What is a Microlight? What are the requirements? How safe is Microlighting? How do I start? Why PYRAMID Flight School?

What is a Microlight?

A microlight is defined as an aeroplane powered by a motor with a total weight not exceeding 450 Kg. They come in two categories, namely "weight shift" or "3 axis" controlled.

Weight shift or trikes are more like a hang-glider which requires that the pilot to use the shift of weight to control direction, climb and descent. They are only two axis because there is no rudder to cause the aircraft to yaw.

3 Axis microlights are more like light aeroplanes and use actual control surfaces such as ailerons and elevators to control them.

What is required to become a Pilot?

Any person wanting to learn to become a qualified Microloght Pilot should be 17 years or older. They will then complete a minimum of 25 hours of instruction flying of which 15 will be solo. A cross-country flight will also be part of this training. Lectures on various subjects such as weather, navigation and radio will be provided. Students are also required to undergo a medical examination  to prove thier health is up to standard for flying.

How safe is Microlighting?

Microlights have an excellent safety record in South Africa.  Each aircraft carries an airworthy certificate, which registered AMO’s sign.

As long as pilots treat the sport with respect and know their limitations, accidents should not occur.
